What are esports?

esports, short for “electronic sports”, are the fastest growing sports industry in the world. It basically encompasses competitive video gaming, meaning that if there’s a video game out there which can be played as a multi-player – there will probably be a tournament for it somewhere! These games are normally played by professional esport athletes with sensational skills and talent.
As most professional sports have been suspended due to the Coronavirus outbreak, sports and players are turning to esports to enable the show to go on virtually. For example, Premier League players are streaming FIFA games on services such as Twitch, and Formula One running a virtual Grand Prix when the races were due to run with drivers.
